1. Introduction and Grounding: Setting the Tone for a Calming and Focused Meditation Experience

Welcome, wonderful middle school students, to this guided meditation. Today, we’ll embark on a journey towards a calm mind and improved focus.
First steps to meditation…
The beauty of meditation is in its simplicity, yet it holds boundless depths to be explored. So, let’s start by discussing a few basics. Feel free to take notes or to simply listen.
- Posture Matters: Sit comfortably, in a chair or on the floor. Keep your spine straight but not stiff, your head held high as if pulling up towards the stars, and your shoulders relaxed. Cross-legged posture is a classic choice, but choose what feels best for you.
- Hands: Rest your hands wherever they’re comfortable. They can be on your knees, or in your lap. The important thing is to be relaxed and natural.
- Breathing: Natural and relaxed breathing is the key to setting the tone for your meditation. You don’t need to change or control it, just let it be.
- Eyes: You can choose to close your eyes or keep them slightly opened, gazing gently and unfocused at a spot in front of you. Silence isn’t always an option, especially in a classroom environment, but do what you can to limit noise interference.
Grounding exercises..
Now with the basics in mind, let’s settle into this space with a couple of grounding exercises.
- Mindful Breathing: Become aware of your breath. Feel the coolness as you breathe in, and the warmth as you breathe out. Observe the gentle rise and fall of your chest and abdomen. This is your anchor during meditation.
- Body Awareness: Scan your body from top to toe, noticing any areas of tension or discomfort. Invite those areas to relax, soften and release.
Setting an intention..
As we’re just about to start, let’s take a moment to set an intention for this meditation. It could be as simple as, “I am focused”, “I am calm”, or “I am open to this experience”. This intention will guide you through the meditation and serve as a beacon to align your focus.
Please remember, it’s okay if your mind starts to wander during our meditation - it’s completely natural. When you notice that happening, just gently guide your focus back to your breathing, back to this present moment. You’re not trying to eliminate thoughts, just bring your awareness back to your breath and the sensation of being here, right now.
