1. Introduction: Setting the Tone for Relaxation in the Life of a Healthcare Worker

In the relentless surge of the healthcare world, it’s easy to get lost amidst the sea of stress, anxiety, and constant pressure. Being a healthcare worker, you are undoubtedly a modern day hero, your commitment to the well-being of others is commendable beyond words.
What we often forget, however, is the importance of the well-being of the healer. The exhaustion of constant care and lack of self-care can lead to burnout, stress and other physical and emotional health issues. The healer too, deserves a moment of serenity, rejuvenation, and relaxation. This is where meditation serves as an oasis of calm in an otherwise stormy and demanding environment.
Setting the ambiance
First and foremost, find a quiet and comfortable space where you can sit undisturbed for a few minutes. This could be anywhere - your office, a peaceful corner at your home, or even a quiet park. Choose a place that feels safe, calming, and inviting.
Body positioning
Once you’ve found your space, sit in a comfortable position. It should ideally be with your back erect, but not strained. You can opt to sit on a chair or a cushion or even against a wall, basically anywhere as long as you are comfortable.
Inhale positivity, exhale negativity
Close your eyes gently, take a deep and slow breath in, hold it for a moment, and then exhale slowly. As you do this, intentionally think about inhaling positivity and peace, and exhaling stress and anxiety.
- Counting your breaths: As you breathe in and breathe out, start counting your breaths. Begin with 1 as you inhale, 2 as you exhale, and so on till 10. Once you reach 10, reset the count back to 1. Do this as many times as you can. This process of counting can help you stay focused and attentive on the breath and keep your mind away from other distractions.
- Be kind to yourself: Use this time to summon all the love, compassion, and kindness you exhibit towards your patients towards yourself. You deserve the generosity of your own compassion, gentleness, and respect.
- Let go of tension: As you breathe in and breathe out, consciously let go of any tension in your shoulders, neck, and other parts of your body where you tend to hold tension. Feel the relaxation flowing into these areas with each inhale and the tension draining away with each exhale.
This practice will serve as a reminder that it is not only okay, but imperative, to seek moments of quiet, tranquility, and self-care amidst the demands of your fast paced life. Give this gift of tranquility to yourself, because you deserve it. You do so much, take this time to nourish your own well-being, because in the healing of the healer, the world finds its cure.
