1. Settling into Presence: The Beginning of Release

Take a long, deep breath in and notice the sensation as the air fills your lungs. Now, slowly release the air, letting it spill from your mouth with an audible sigh. As you exhale, feel your body begin to relax, surrendering to the present moment. With every breath in, recognize your existence within the universe, and with every exhale, let go a little bit more, releasing any tension that may have built up within your body and mind. Now, just let your breath continue to flow naturally without trying to control or force it.
Kick off your shoes, choose a comfortable spot where you won’t be interrupted—this could be a cushy armchair, a soft blanket on the floor, or even a cozy corner of your bed. Make sure your surroundings are quiet, calm, and will allow you peace for the next few minutes.
Settle into your space. Allow your body to become heavy, sinking into the support beneath you. Feel the connection with the ground underneath you, a constant, reassuring presence. This is grounding you in the here and now.
Close your eyes and take a moment to perform a mental scan of your body, starting from your toes, moving up through your legs, abdomen, hands, arms, shoulders, and finally resting on the crown of your head.
- As you mentally journey through your body, note any tension or discomfort you may be carrying.
- Now, take a long, slow, deep breath in, and when you exhale, imagine you are breathing out all that tension and discomfort, letting it melt away with the flow of your breath.
- Revisit each part of your body and take the time to thank it for supporting you. Send your love and gratitude to it. This will foster a stronger connection between your body and mind.
Bring your attention now to your thoughts. You may notice they’re darting about, chattering, rushing from one topic to another. This is completely normal.
Our minds are like busy highways. But remember, you are not the highway. You are the observer standing by, watching the cars go by. So, instead of getting tangled in the traffic of your thoughts, visualize yourself stepping off the highway and standing on the overlooking hill, just observing those thoughts pass by.
Now, imagine each thought is a gently floating leaf in a stream.
- As a leaf comes into your view, acknowledge it. That could be a worry about a meeting tomorrow, a dispute with a close friend, a chore you have been putting off—acknowledge it.
- Now, let it float by. It’s just a leaf floating downstream. You don’t need to chase it or hold onto it. Just let it float away.
This practice is about accepting and acknowledging your thoughts and feelings, but not holding onto them. This is what it means to truly let go.
Take a moment to feel the peace that this brings. Bask in the calm that it offers.
Remember, it’s okay if your mind wanders, that’s what minds do. When you find yourself caught up in thoughts, gently bring yourself back to the visualization of the leaves in the stream. Be gentle, be forgiving.
